I was having a hard time figuring out the order in which to read all of Larry Niven's Known Space and Man-Kzin Wars stories. There are several lists on the internet but all are incomplete and many have conflicting dates so I decided to assemble my own list and make it as definitive as possible. Hopefully this can be a helpful resource for any one who wants to undertake a thorough reading of these incredible series.

· The stories “The Warriors” and “Telepath’s Dance” have listed dates that conflict with the timeline on Larryniven.net. This is because the novels had to take place a minimum of four years prior to the invasion of Wunderland due to the length of time it would take the Angel’s Pencil message to get there from Earth. Food For Thought: Primero

Why is it that its illegal to attempt to aide ISIS, an quote/unquote Islamic Fundamentalist group designated as a terrorist organization, but the KKK is allowed to operate with near impunity in many parts of the American South to this day?

The Klu Klux Klan is one of the oldest domestic terror organizations in the US and possibly the world, so why are they not designated as such by our government, and even allowed to stage rallies in major cities in the South?If I fly to Syria to join ISIS I can be arrested and prosecuted for aiding a terrorist organization. But if I stroll out to the woods and burn crosses with white supremacist hate mongers apparantly I am just exercising my civil liberties.

Does this not seem to be rather inconsistent.

Granted the KKK is not in the forefront of Americans minds. With the daily atrocities being committed by radical Islamist groups in the Middle East it seems apparent where the true threat lies. The modern KKK is not comparable on any scale.

But let's look at this more closely. ISIS is known for attacking worshipers from other religions, and destroying their churches and temples in the name of "Islam."

The KKK routinely burnt and bombed black businesses, homes, and even places of worship leading up to and during the civil rights movement. The most famous bombing being the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in 1963, although it was but one of many.

ISIS, to the horror of Americans at home, beheaded on film at least two reporters from the US, as well as a British reporter and countless innocent Kurds and Arabs.

The KKK was, and is, feared and reviled for a reason. Stories abound of the tortures that members of the group perpetrated on innocent black (and some white) folk, who also happened to be American citizens. Some of the more gruesome stories include rape, lynching, flaying the flesh from the feet of a living victim as he was hung, and torching victims alive.

ISIS uses violence to enforce their own ideology on other human beings.

Do I really need to point out that, when capable, the KKK has done the same thing and still propagates an agenda that calls for total race segregation and is racist in its very essence.

So why do we tolerate this perverse domestic entity while we drop bombs on American citizens overseas for supposed links to Al-Qaeda, Al-Shabab, ISIS etc?

The only rationale I can find is that there is still a very powerful thread running through our houses of congress. A thread that pumps the lifeblood of the institutionalized racism that, although glossy on the surface, is deep down inside holding on to a worldview that will not stay dead.

Klansmen have served in out Senate and in as Representatives to congress. Only recently the passing of and anti-immigration admitted white supremacist was in the news because he had served in congress until his death.

He and many other long-serving congressman voted against the civil rights act, motivated solely by their prejudice and continued to play politics, switching sides and apologizing for their actions when it was made clear that a new day was dawning.

It could be an interesting, although time-consuming undertaking to compile a detailed list of all the members of our federal government with known ties to racists groups, or those who have openly spouted racist agenda, over the course of the last fifty or sixty years.

I am certain that the sum total would be staggering, as well as shocking.

Food for thought:

Next time you see state sanctioned confederate iconography, whenever you hear a debate about racism in our country, when you hear of American civilians dying overseas, or hear about the horrors of the war in the Middle East, when you see with your own eyes the KKK openly gathering at a state capital, fully protected by the constitution of our wonderful country, stop........

And ask yourself why.

Food For Thought Segundo

I love the way that the supposedly right-wing “conservative” political leaders in America are constantly claiming to uphold the constitution. In fact you would think it was the sacred word of God the way some talk of it. So why are these upstanding defenders of the law so quick to go against their own ideals when it comes to an issue that makes them “personally” uncomfortable? It’s easy to say you support the law of the nation when it coincides with what you feel is morally right. But, in the course of abiding by the law certain actions may be taken by individuals that may very well violate your own code of ethics or morality. In these cases one must use utmost discretion when deciding if the action, although legal, is harmful to other human beings, or society as a whole. The same is true for actions deemed morally right that are technically illegal. For instance running a red-light to get out of an ambulance’s way is not considered wrong even though it is illegal by definition. Simply put you have to weigh the letter of the law not against your own feelings or comfort level, but against the end result on society as a whole, or specifically the human beings that are directly or indirectly affected by said action. This does not give us carte blanche to break the law whenever we see fit. Instead it is our responsibility as citizens to try to separate our emotion from our interpretation of law. Just because something feels right or wrong at the moment doesn’t mean that it actually is. So ……. A mosque near ground-zero? Abandoning the law in one place due to personal outrage will open a door for an abuse of power from bureaucrats, law enforcement, and anyone else who has been left to uphold the law. Some roads are best not travelled down. We are not the law. The law governs us even when we don’t like it.
